A 24-year-old local man who pleaded guilty to selling cigarettes in Brunei Darussalam without a licence was slapped with a $27,500 fine by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court yesterday.
The defendant, Mohammad Nasrul Hakimin, who runs a business at De'Nasti Mashdar Rizq Enterprise at Britannia House in the capital was given six months' grace time to settle the fine. If he fails to pay the fine, he will be imprisoned for 15 months.
Mohammad Nasrul Hakimin was caught with 3,482 packets of cigarettes of various brands that were to be sold to the public on October 14, 2009. The court was told that this was an offence punishable under Section 146(1)(i) of the Excise Order and Section 12(3) of the Tobacco Order 2005.
The defendant was caught by Customs Preventive personnel who carried out an inspection following a public tip-off.
According to the Royal Customs & Excise Department's prosecuting officer, the cigarettes are worth $8,000, while the excise duty to be paid was $4,101.
