Officers cut short conversation at illegal 'call shop'

An illegal business that offered "call home" IDD services to foreigners was busted by officers from the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI) and personnel of Berakas Police Station yesterday afternoon.

It is believed that the "call shop" was making a fast buck by operating a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service, in which customers could make calls overseas at a cheaper rate than normal IDD rates.

Following a raid on a bungalow house in Kg Anggerek Desa, officers found 10 cordless phones. It is believed that most of the customers who would frequent the illegal call shop were Bangladeshis and Indians.

When questioned by officers, a Filipina cashier working at the call shop revealed that the shop could pull in about $90 each day. Most customers would use the service in the evenings, she said.

It was learnt that one of the cheapest IDD call rates offered by the illegal call shop was for India - customers only had to pay five cents per minute.

Logbooks, cordless phones and systems used to facilitate the IDD calls were seized during the raid.

Officers stressed that that raid was conducted because the call shop was operating illegally, as it did not have any licence - which is a violation under Section 33 of the Telecom Order 2001. Those who are found guilty are liable to a maximum fine of $100,000.
